Raft and damp treatment

Damp and timber problems get worse when they are left alone. We find where the water comes from, treat the cause and repair the damage. Our work covers damp in walls, rafters in the roof and raft foundations under the house.

Damp treatment

Damp has three common causes, and each needs a different fix:

  • Rising damp. Ground water rises up the walls because the damp-proof course has failed or is bridged.
  • Penetrating damp. Rain gets in through walls, roofs, gutters or windows.
  • Condensation. Moist air inside the home settles on cold surfaces.

We find which type you have before we recommend any work. Treatments can include a new damp-proof course, repairs to the building outside, better ventilation, and replastering.

Rafter treatment and repair

Rafters are the sloping timbers that hold up the roof. Leaks, condensation and old spray foam can cause rot or woodworm. We inspect the rafters, treat timber that can be saved, and strengthen or replace timber that cannot.

Raft foundations

A raft foundation is a concrete slab that supports the whole house. Damp, cracks or ground movement can affect it. We inspect raft foundations and carry out damp-proofing and repairs where the survey shows they are needed.

Signs to look for

  • Tide marks, peeling paint or crumbling plaster low on the walls
  • Black mould on walls, ceilings or window frames
  • A musty smell in rooms or in the loft
  • Soft, dark or powdery timber in the roof
  • New cracks in walls or floors
